Help me to install the freeware NZ topo map on my Oregon?

Postby mauao » 30-03-2012 18:44

I have bought a new Oregon 550 from the US and want to install the Freeware (NZOpen GPS) NZ topo maps on it. Is there anyone prepared to give me help on this. I have a Mac with OS 10.6.8 and Intel i3 processor. I have had a look at the info - and started to download the map on to my computer firs - without success. Is there anyone can help me out - and let me know if there are any risks the 550 software at all. I think I'd like to put the maps on to a Micro SD card and use that to load into the 550. Anyone with the time to 'talk me through' please? Terry

You would be better asking this on the NZ Open GPS forum. Apparently they do have versions of their maps for macs. Try researching: http://www.nzopengps.org/public/Mac/

Unfortunately for the Topo maps, you'll need someone with a PC to download the exe files, install them to MapSource, and produce an img file for you. Or you'll need to do it in a Windows virtual machine on a Mac (how I do it). The map files are unfortunately too large for them to host on their servers - the free topo clocks in at over 600MB.

Other than that, your plan is good. Once you have the img file for topo and another for the autorouting roads, put them in the \Garmin folder on the micro SD card, and then just install the card, turn the GPS on, and you should be good to go. That's exactly how I do it - all the third party stuff on the storage card.

Have replied on the OP forum regarding the simple street map install. Not the MapSource / BaseCamp method yet.

To add the Open Project topo to your GPS, download the ready made NZ Open Project Topo v5.2+.img from my Dropbox here.

It's a slow but ad-free connection. Put the file in the Oregon > Garmin folder.

Note, it has no roads as it is made to work with the OP street/POI map.
