Munzee

Postby rediguana » 27-01-2012 16:18

I see that Munzee is becoming more and more popular on these shores, I actually stumbled across one recently - didn't have the app though so didn't 'capture' it. It got me thinking though - is there enough interest to create a Munzee forum/subforum here? Or is everyone happy enough using the Munzee forums?

I have the app on my iPod but untill I can find them offline and log them next time I'm near a free wifi there is not much I can do. Will be interesting to see what others say.

I do actually have a bar code reader on my phone, but haven't even looked to see if there is any about over here. Maybe I should check. So I guess I'm a no for needing a Munzee forum.

I will admit to today loading the Munzee app on my phone for next time I see one in a cache. Not sure that I'd yet go out hunting for just an mz, but time will tell.

I've been out to hunt Munzee but found it completely unsatisfying compared to caching. They seem to be hidden in plain sight most of the time which makes it too easy and reduces the "EUREKA" moment significantly. Plus there is no log on the Munzee to show who has been there and what there story was, no fun little trackables to find, and yes, no swag to grumble over. I have seen a few in caches but just couldn't be bothered starting up the app.

And in saying all that I am glad that others like the game and have fun with it. If I wasn't already playing and enjoying geocaching I might be interested in Munzee.

You've got to remember that munzee isn't geocaching, it's another games that uses GPS technology. I'll be the first to admit that it is a bit unerwhelming when compared with Geocaching.

There is loging (journal entries) and there is a history of who else has scanned a particular munzee.

I think the whole concept is aimed at those with smart phones, basically load the app and go.

I agree with your comments, but I think that Munzee is aimed at a different user demographic - and it will be successful in that group.

It's all about the numbers and being competitive against other players. The game is setup for the ease of claiming lots of finds (no opening boxes, no logs) and your points score is proudly shown for your competitors to see (and drool over?). For some cachers this is going to be a real improvement over traditional geocaching and it's going to suit them really well.

Have you ever given Munzee hunting a go?

Although the above article doesn't actually say anything about Munzee's, so called 'malicious QR code' does not affect the game as it uses it's own app (not a QR reader) and if the QR code is invalid (not a munzzee) it tells you and nothing more happens, not bad web sites, not malicious downloads etc.

Unfortunately I can't even get enough time to devote to geocaching as I'd like.

I'd probably agree however, given such a small potential audience it's hardly worthwhile anyone bothering to exploit the munzee app.

I found Munzee just as satisfying as Geocaching. I liked the fact that one you scan the code you are done and you don't have to worry about writing a log online. I don't think it is any more about the numbers than geocaching.

Sharing the experience is one of the best parts of the game for me, hence my dissatisfaction with Munzee. But I can see it being a good sport for those who don't have much interest in that side.

I think the other thing that has meant Munzee and I haven't gelled is that they mostly seem to be urban and I very much prefer a long walk in the bush. The jury is still out for me on whether I would go for a long walk in the bush to find a Munzee, especially as I love getting there and seeing what people wrote in the logs (which I find is sometimes quite different to what they wrote online! ).

It will be interesting to see how the game lasts. Geocaching seems to be doing well after 10 years and though it appears to have changed throughout that time it is, in essence, still largely the same. I wonder how Munzee will develop over time to keep users interested?
