Potential NZ MEGA Event 2012 - is there sufficient interest?

The NZ Recreational GPS Society (http://www.gps.org.nz) is considering the option of hosting a NZ MEGA event - probably in either Easter or in October 2012. The likely location is Christchurch - the largest city in NZ's South Island.

500 people are needed for a MEGA Event.
They take a bit of organising (sponsorship, prizes, etc) and generally last 3 days or so.
It may involve camping, cabins or some other group accommodation arrangement - we're yet to identify the actual location and logistical arrangements.
At this point of time, its only an idea - no guarantee that we'll go through with it, however we're interested in guaging the number of potential attendees so that we know whether or not the idea is worth persuing.

Please note that this poll will be run in parrellel on the Geocaching.com.au Forum. Please only respond with indicative numbers in one location - not both.

Depends also on your definition of "attend". Being a local to the intended location, I would be interested in attending one or some of the activities throughout the weekend, but wouldn't commit to being there for the entire thing, nor requring any accommodation.

At this stage we're after the number that would log an "attended" log on the cache page - so a 5 minute visit to it as you're driving by on your way to a local shopping mall counts for now.

There are a few options I could have chosen ...

Yes - I'd attend - there's only one person in my group - I'm the only geocaching account holder in my family, and I may be the only one to make it down there.

Yes - three or more of us (eg a family group) will attend together - Hopefully my whole family can make it down there, but even if it only my sons & I, that will be 3.

I'm unsure - 2012 is just too far away - So true; I want to be there, but I can't be sure.

I'm unsure - I'd prefer somewhere else in NZ - The north island is more accessible to me, esp. the Wairarapa at the moment.

For now, I have selected Yes - three or more of us (eg a family group) will attend together.

will be on the outer with this event. Not able to be full on involved in the organising, but I'm sure I can offer some support (no, not sponsorship fundraising - hate that!)
Only 15 months to organise! wow! It will be full on for any committee.

Loved the event caches at Oz Wagga Mega, that showcased the area, and allowed us to pick up nearby caches at the same time.
Having a scout camp ground made a huge impact on organising.....
but we can do it without the Oz flies!

I'd make it a priority to attend, where-ever it is held in NZ. Although Chch is convenient, if the consensus shifts to that other island I'd be happy to go hunt in virgin caching grounds As Easter is generally the time I'm allowed to go feral from family obligations for me, I'd try to squeeze the last drop from my time away, so unless the Mega schedule was amazingly appealing, I'd probably try and get the smiley and run. Some of you know this already

Anywhere in the South Island I would say a definate yes to, North Island - it would take a bit of convincing the wife to get up there.

I see that there was only 336 logged as attended the Aussie one in Wagga Wagga, is the 500 for a MEGA event more of a goal than a rigid policy?

Don't forget that one found log couple represent a family of four, or a couple

Aaah. (Light goes on). So to get Mega Status we just need to have 500+ PEOPLE commit to attending, but if only 30 teams log as attended the event still stands? Hypothetically speaking of course.... I honestly wonder if we have enough active cachers in NZ to do it - even with a little help from our friends from Oz.

The Auckland 10.10.10 event had 110 people attend, so it only needs just over 4 times as many to hit the 500 figure.
