How to load hints on 60CX

Postby DaveM » 15-02-2012 18:49

Hi all,
have decided after 6yrs of owning, I'm going to use my GPS to geocache. I'm a premium member at Geocaching.com, but obviously am still far too challenged when it comes to technology. I have GSAK, so have most of the gear, but no idea

I wrongly assumed that I could download the geocaches I was wanting to, and have the hints show on the GPS at the same time. Obviously I am wrong, so is there an EASY (non technical) way to store these on the GPS also? (I struggle without hints).
I have Topomaps on my current SD card, so assume that if I want to use the SD for more memory storage, I will lose the benefit of better mapping (will have to remove the topo SD)

Thanks in advance,
Dave

I used to use GSAK to load caches into my 60CSx's (until I had a fleet upgrade) so that I could use custom symbols for different cache types and use "%Hint" to load the cache hint into the comment field for the geocache waypoint.

All this is configued from the "GPS > Send Waypoints" popup config page.

I don't use a 60 anymore but when I did I used to upload the hints to custom POI's. However, you can also add them to the comments field of the cache. I think the screen shot below will be useful for you showing the %hint smart tag that MD mentioned. You will also see reference to a GSAK macro that allows the caches to show with custom symbols on your map, just check the GSAK macro forum on how to get it working.

Thanks for the tips. Didn't get to try this before heading away, but managed to find 36 or so caches without the hints, and left around 15 or so after not finding within a few mins. Will have a play with this and see if I can get the hints loaded.

Cheers,
Dave

The key point to getting it to work is putting %hint in the Description field. If you do that, you shouldn't have any problems.

I use same GPS. I have down loaded Custom Points of Interest program form Garmin site. Then, export GPX file from GSAK to POI then from there to my GPS. Works a treat. You just have to set what info you export, as GPS has limited character spaces. Good thing is, on the GPS you are not limited to 500 as in way points, how ever, I redo POI export when I reload my GPS using same filter in GSAK. That keeps the info field free in your way point for other info, eg name of cache, often helpful. When at the cache site, the nearest POI will be same as that WP. Pete

Thanks Pete,
I look forward to finding more of your caches in the coming weeks.
