Google Earth - need we say more?

I've just tried it

Postby Chaucey » 26-07-2005 18:14

I've just had a go at Google earth as my co-worker installed it at work.
I enjoyed looking at things and the interface is pretty good. However - typing in co-ordiantes didn't work properly for me. I tried some Wellington co-ords and they kept taking me to the marlborough sounds. Tried different methods, some of which resulted in me being in the middle of the ocean near Australia somewhere!
Also, I couldn't figure out how to get it to do co-ords in my preferred format of dd mm.xxx.

So, I'm not convinced about it yet!

8) Mana Island S41.08805deg E174.77990

or S41deg 05.283min E174 46.794

or S41deg 05min 17.0sec E174 46 47.7

just think % of 60

eg 5.283 div 60 = .08805 etc etc etc

Are we going to start seeing more censorship of Google Earth imagery?

Gee, almost seems like they want to be seen as important enough to have secrets too!

Bet they regret painting that huge bulls eye on the reactor core...

If you really want a picture of Lucas Heights, the flights from Sydney to Melbourne often fly right over it. If you use a film camera (no electronics while the seatbelt light is on!), you could take your own high-res photo!

Just downloaded the latest version 3.0.0616 (beta) and not sure if I missed it before but a couple of new layers of interest: 3D Buildings, and Confluence Points (clickable links to the Confluence webpages).

The 3D buildings (New York) really made my little old laptop struggle a bit, but ...DANG!...this is one cool set of bytes!

BTW, I don't think I've mentioned it here, but you can see all the local caches automatically by clicking here and then saving it in My Places.

Saves the step of importing your GPX file. Just un-tick it if it's getting in the way.

One new feature I like in a recent release is that you can now just copy and paste the coords from a geocaching.com cachepage and it handles the degree symbol. It used to require you to edit them out.

this Gc.com thread is discussing the geocaching.com update coming in the next week or so wit the Google Earth integration. Looking good.

Had to laugh at this image though (USA caches)

Looks like the Mexicans don't have as much spare time or money to geocache as the yanks do. 8)
Great use for Google Earth though. NZCaches.tk may soon be obsolete.
Google, Yahoo, eBay and Microsoft are rapidly assimilating half the useful stuff on the internet. They are the Borg.
Shame GE does not have any decent street-level maps/images around Christchurch yet, but hard to argue with Google's free delivery model. The aerial/sat photo images around Sydney on GE are awesome. I just "flew" around the suburb and national parks where I used to live (pre-geocaching) and find my old home now surrounded by tempting caches! =P~

Ok, fun time again! :D

The geocaching.com networking KML download is a go now. I really gotta do a Nelson run in the near future!!!
