Navigating with Google Earth

Postby Cookasaurus » 30-09-2010 21:58

So I got a bit bored when I was studying and these are the results...

Ever wanted the 2010 Audi A7 Google Earth system in your car?

Live positioning and tracking in google earth offline using caches i've scanned over then backed up to areas (2g limit).
First played with on my desktop (grunty pc), now have on a cheap netbook which is portable(em350) running smoothly.

Garmin map60csx --> GpsGate --> Earth Bridge --> Google earth.
Running on 32bit XP and 64bit Win7.
Garmin is usb into the pc.
GpsGate emulates the com port you would get from a serial cable.
Earth Bridge sends all the right data to GE and is easy to tweak (height etc).

I'd upload pics and vids but i've blown my bandwidth for the month sadly!

Any questions please send them my way or just post on here. It was hard to find this info so
hopefully this helps someone out :)

Should be easy enough to setup with nearly any pc or gps as far as i can see.

Hi Cookie

I could live with a 2010 Audi A7

FWIW
I went down a slightly different path.
My setup:
12inch hp notebook fitted to homemade jump seat shelf in my Hiace campervan. Easily viewed by driver and passenger but the screen does shield the stereo. :?
Maps can be downloaded from Google Earth and MANY other sources for later offline use with Mobile Atlas Creator.
Most raster mapping software can use the resulting mapsets.
Mapsets downloaded to date include Google Earth/Maps - NZ All levels, Map (including all towns at street level), Satellite, Terrain, Australia (some and most towns),Yahoo Maps (some).
I use OziExplorer, GPSTrackmaker,SeaClear, CompeGPS etc. OkMap (freeware) looks promising.
I also downloaded and converted/merged the entire LINZ Topo50 mapset for use with OziExplorer etc.
For Garmin maps I run Garmin MobilePC, MapSource, nRoute, BaseCamp, HomePort, GPSMapedit and gpsVPxp etc.
GPS receiver can be bluetooth, GPSMap60C, GPSII+ (now 14 years old?) or nuvi 250 (yes it does output data and even has track logging).
GpsGate and XPort are used as serial port interfaces/emulators if required.

My Google Earth is used online only. 8)

Hey thanks for the fantastic quick reply!

As for the car well hopefully one of us will win lotto next weekend!
Hope you don't mind me asking a few more q's, as your offline way seems a bit better
than the 2g cache i'm currently stuck with.

Have you tried getting google E 3d maps into Oziexplorer? And when you make
maps in mobile AC do you just choose the lowest zoom and make one large .png
file for NZ, or do you try tile it to lower each file size? Would it matter? (performance issues with the less grunty laptop)

Sorry for all the q's, but you really know what you're upto!

Righteo finally have you tried overlaying layers in Oziexplorer? I've got bluecharts
somewhere that i'd like to lower over the ge satellite(hybrid) images

Cheers bud
