Let's get the ball rolling, people ...

If the society's goal is to keep the same general coin design, then I'd like to see a Maori hei-tiki icon - perhaps a more stylised version of this.

But if anything goes, then a full colour Maori tiki with a GPS screen for his stomach, displaying the basic co-ordinates for NZ. (after all if Dick Frizzell can give his tiki Mickey Mouse ears ...)

Idea No 2:
A coin honouring GC46, aka New Zealand's oldest cache and the world's third oldest still active hide.
This is the closest thing Kiwi cachers have to a 'holy grail' and definitely worth of a metal tribute. The esteem with which Kevin Anderson's cache is held internationally would also ensure the next society coin retained its high price overseas.
Composition-wise, I've always been fond of this ADV photo on the Wellington 10 Years event listing page:

OK, after a little bit of prompting and a bunch of hours, here is my entry ...

The front of the coin -

... and the back of the coin -

It will be noticed that I have "borrowed" a few design elements from the 2010 coins ... I figured they were a good starting point ... (and why re-invent the wheel?! :D )

Done a couple of tweaks based on suggestions by a "Peanuts" character from the BOP ...

Note that my entries above are design suggestions rather than finished designs ... noting that my original suggestion was -

How about a coin with a picture of a rugby ball and the wording "The other sport"? - nothing about the RWC, so that should be safe.

If my design or mine & tgsnooopy's design wins, modification to it will be quite OK. :D

But what about the other other sport - geocaching? I've been waiting for someone to suggest it, but it hasn't surfaced yet, so:

How about a NZ Mega 2012 themed coin? Slap on the official NZ Mega logo and tag line, and have them produced in time to flog off at the mega.

I think that is the best thought yet! :)

This is a discussion for a 2011 coin, I expect the committee will have a coin sorted for the 2012 Mega :)

My idea - and Im no artist

An evening setting with Mitre Peak on one side (its iconic and easily recognised), stylised water at the bottom, and a Punga tree bordering the other side, with a Wood Pigeon flying between.

Ha ha, I knew we would get tangled up with dates! Going by previous years, it seems that the "2011" coin will be designed in 2011 but produced and on sale in 2012, and the "2012" coin wouldn't be on sale until 2013... So let me amend the wording of my suggestion:

How about a NZ Mega 2012 themed coin? Slap on the official NZ Mega logo and tag line, and have them produced in time to flog off at the mega.

There is quite a bit of interest in a 22 Feb 2011 earthquake coin as well - in Christchurch at least when I've been selling coins.

Would a 'Shaky Isles' type coin cover it? Perhaps get some sponsorship from Geonet?
