SUGGESTIONS FOR SMALL MARINE GPS

Postby GerryAttrick » 25-08-2011 10:45

I have recently become involved in Kayak Fishing and one of the "must have" toys it seems is a combined Fish finder/GPS.

Most seem to go with the Humminbird or Lowrance models but I'd be interested to know if there are any others out there that use OpenSource maps(marine). The units need to be quite small and preferably a combo unit but if I need to go for separate units I'll probably opt for a small mounted fish finder and possible a separate GPS provided it has decent Open Sourcemarine charts available.

Anyone here have any suggestions worth investigating further? I don't know if either the Humminbird or Lowrance accept Open Source maps

Fish finder? Where can I obtain one please. :D
Universal unit? I am not aware of a suitable one.
I have a depth sounder and wanna be "fish finder" on my boat with a separate notebook or Garmin Dakota 20 for navigation that I also use on my kayak.
Any of the current Garmin hand held mapping units should suit your GPS navigation requirements.
Screenshots from my Dakota 20. Colours do not accurately reflect on screen results (especially the vectors).
Raster & vector images both created by me from freely available LINZ data.

Check out the Garmin 400S series ..... the S models are dual.

I have the 421S in a yacht, works well. The down side is you have to have the 2G Bluecharts, I do not seam to be able to get any other map formats to work, which is a bit of a bugger on the lakes, as the Bluechart only covers Lake Taupo, and the lake outlines are generally poor.
