User Account Cleanout (PLEASE READ)

Postby rediguana » 05-10-2011 19:23

Hi all,

I'm going to do a major purge of user accounts on the forums, probably Friday next week, 9 days from now.

If you have made at least 1 published post (e.g. it has got past our moderators) to the forums, you can leave now, this won't affect you. Only read on if you have never posted a public message, and your post count in your profile reads 0.

The basic approach is going to be this: I select all user accounts that have 0 posts on the forums, and I delete them. Yes, this may will delete some real user accounts, but it is something I'm willing to live with if it means we get to have a major cleanup of accounts in the forum database. This will go a long way towards helping us to delete quite a few thousand spam accounts that have been set up over the years. Alas, there are so many spam accounts, and so few real accounts in amongst them, that it would be very time consuming to go through and weed them out by hand.

If you haven't yet made a single post, then I'd either encourage you to make at least one post before next Friday, otherwise your account will be deleted. How can you do that? You've got a couple of options...

1. Say hi in this thread - just hit reply. Just don't make your message look like spam, or try and post a blank message, as it won't be approved.
2. Read some recent threads and continue the conversations we've been having.

Cheers Gav

Can you automagically send an email to the registered email address before doing so?
The chances of anyone that this is likely to affect seeing this message is probably less that that of them winning lotto. They may however read emails.
Conversely - the accounts that you really want to delete are probably those with non-functioning email as well.
I'd guess you'll only have a handful of real replies.
(edit - and send it from a temporary email account too!)

This would that one post.
I did eventually work out where my account went.

I bought a ticket for October today.
See you all there.

Hi, I just registered - so this is my first post :) My main reason for joining was to ask for advice on technical aspects of mapping and getting DEM data on my Garmin to override the low-resolution elevation data of the worldwide basemap. I do some tramping but not fit enough or experienced enough yet for multiday hikes — I've done all the local hikes up Mt Herbert, Mt Oxford, Mt Thomas, Mt Richardson, Mt Grey, Foggy Peak and starting to look further afield. I love my GPS — just upgraded to an eTrex 30 a few weeks ago after leaving my eTrex H on the roof of the car — and am hoping to learn from the community here. Started geocaching this year — just casually, not in it for the numbers :) Have found 22 so far.

For that - you're out of luck, unless you want to pay Garmin for maps, as their proprietary DEM format hasn't been reverse engineered yet. Why do you particularly want DEM rather than a topo map/contours?
The rest you should be fine with.

It just annoys me when you plug in a summit waypoint and it tells you you need to walk downhill:

I guess I can learn to with it.

Hi, just introducing myself. I joined this forum to read more about geocaching & which type of garmin to get etc but am definitely more a lurker than a contributor at the moment! I've been using this same username.
