Is there some kind of emblem or motif for the Mega? The Oz Mega this year is using the Platypus and/or the Murray Cod.Pathtaggers can then put this motif on the pathtags they make especially for the Mega event.

We have booked our flights and are working on the accommodation. We are thinking of a camper van but see there are no powered sites there. That's not too much of a problem but will there be toilets and showers available?

Yes indeed. There are several toilet blocks at various points around the site and showers attached to the main building.

And if you want powered campsites, you can stay at campgrounds not too far away.

I am looking for a POI GPX file of all camp sites in NZ - especially the free overnight camps. Is there such a file available?

Note: I use a Magellan 610 eXplorist and VantagePoint maps on the PC.

Yes - you have both registered your interest. This was an additional hoop we had to jump through as it is our first Mega, and we had to do this to get the Mega listing.

We will have a formal and paid registration process available in the next couple of months, details about this will be emailed out to everyone that has registered their interest, as well as everyone else. But we're just working through budgets so we can set the registration price...

I'm not sure where free overnight campsites are listed. DOC campsites are very affordable. If you're looking for a good POI database, there is the community-driven Zenbu. If you register (free) then you can download the whole database, or just your searches as GPX. This is also the same POI database that is used in the Garmin-only New Zealand Open GPS Maps project.

The committee discussed this at a recent meeting, and the outcome was that animals were not going to be allowed onsite due to the large numbers of people. Naturally, working/service animals such as guide dogs would be allowed.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you on this.

Cheers Gav

This is not so much of a question, but a bug report. In the FAQ, the link to the maps is incorrect - it points to
http://www.gps.org.nz/geocaching/mega20 ... 2/gps_maps instead of
http://www.gps.org.nz/geocaching/mega2012/gps_maps

Looking forward to going - my first MEGA and my first visit to NZ :)

Cheers!

Now the Oz Mega is done and dusted my attention turns to En Zed. I'm planning to fly Syd to ChCh and drive down to Dunedin, stay for the Mega Event and then head back via ChCh.

It looks like the flights on JetStar arrive at either 10.30 pm or 12:45 am (depending on the day I fly). Given I'm unlikely to get a hire car then (or want to drive), is there a decent place to stay near the airport?

Zenbu is helpful and 'open' and where we get the POI data for the free Autorouting maps:http://www.zenbu.co.nz/search/findnearest?q=hotel&l=christchurch+airport - Apart from some inappropriate search results - you can see that there's basically only the Sudima and the Commodore near the Airport. If you want something a bit more budget, you'd need to spring for a taxi/shuttle into town ( the same would go for rental cars as well!)
